What was the stock market crash like for the average investor.  Thousands of Americans invested money in the stock market without truly understanding the workings of it.  Some investors (this is still true today) based their investments solely on predictions of leading economists.  Others responded in conjunction with the market - when it goes down, sell - when it goes up, buy!

This website was created by Mark Underwood.  He took headlines from the New York Times before, during and after the stock market to illustrate what people were hearing as the event occurred.  In hindsight, we know the mistakes they made and would avoid them.  But how would we react if we didn't know history and were reading the headlines as they had back in 1929.

As you read the various headlines (and explore the links Mr. Underwood has created off the headlines) try to, " imagine you are an amateur investor in that time, trying to decide what to do with your money...

1.  Read the first page of Headlines (up to October 23, 1929).
